How to Read Cyrillic in Netscape
under Windows 95/98
Revised 22 May 2000

STEP 1.  Click on "My Computer," then "Control Panel," and then "Add/Remove Programs."

STEP 2.  Select the "Windows Set Up" tab and scroll down to the language support selection.

STEP 3.  Once you find the correct selection, click and chose the Cyrillic option.

STEP 4.  You may have to put in the Windows CD-ROM or disks.   Windows will spin, and then you will have to re-boot.

STEP 5.  After the system restarts, open Netscape and click on "Edit" and then on "Preferences" (at the bottom of the "Edit" menu).

STEP 6.  Near the top, left, click on "Fonts."

STEP 7.  In the window that opens to the right, under the first selection, "For the Encoding" choose "Cyrillic."

STEP 8.  Under the next selection, "Variable Width Font," choose "Arial" size 12.

STEP 9.  For the third (final) selection, "Fixed Width Font," choose "Courier New" size 10.

STEP 10.  Close Netscape and re-open it.

STEP 11.  Click on "View" and then on "Character Set."

STEP 12.  In about the middle of the list, select the proper Cyrillic encoding.  (See below about encodings).

STEP 13.  If you wish to keep the Cyrillic encoding as your regular encoding, click on "Set Default Character Set" at the bottom of the list before you close the "Character Set" menu.

CYRILLIC ENCODINGS:  There are two popular encodings:  KOI-8 and Win1251.  Most Russian-Language sites offer an option for either, but 1251 seems to be winning acceptance.

NOTE:  If Netscape is set for Cyrillic encoding, other languages, such as German, may have strange characters in them.  Simply switch back to the "Western" character set at the top of the list.  Don't forget to click on "Set Default Character Set" at the bottom of the list before you close the "Character Set" menu if you had set Cyrillic as the default earlier.
