Places visited while your great grandparents, Teenie and Chase, visited Grandpa Roy in England in July 1976,shortly after the Bicentennial celebrations in the U.S. Highlights are presented in alphabetic order, not in order visited.

Avebury

Visited in July 1976, these stones were not far from the famous Stonehenge. Grandpa Roy and his parents stayed at a hotel near these stones when they visited Stonehenge.

Cambridge

Home of the famous university on the River Cam.

Chester, Roman Fort

Grandpa Chase really liked exploring the remains of the Roman fort at Chester.

Corbridge

Visited in summer 1976 by Grandpa Roy and his parents, Great Grandma Teenie and Great Grandpa Chase when Grandpa was still in the Air Force. Corbridge is known for its bridge, an impressive stone structure with seven arches erected in 1674 to replace one built in the 13th century.

Houghton House

Houghton House is a ruined mansion not too far from where Grandpa Roy lived. It was built from 1615 to 1621.

Kenilworth Castle

Kenilworth Castle is over 900 years old and was once used by Elizabeth I.

Lambton Castle

Built between 1820 and 1828, it is located in County Durham where Grandpa Roy's Grandmother was from.

Nottingham

Home of Robinhood and his merry men who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor.

Oxford

The prestigious Oxford University is here.

Stonehenge

When your grandfather and his parents visited, there was no barrier around Stonehenge and visitors could touch the stones. As it happened, people also climbed on the stones and some even defaced them, so the road was torn up that was next to it and a barrier put around it that prevented people from getting too close to the stones.

Stratford on Avon

The birthplace, home and grave location of William Shakespeare.

Unknown Park

Your great grandparents visited a park, name and location long forgotten, while visiting Grandpa Roy in England in 1976.

Warwick Castle

A medieval castle developed from a wooden fort originally built by William the Conqueror during 1068. It was rebuilt in stone during the 12th century.

Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is used as a weekend home for the monarch and is just about in downtown Windsor itself. Aunt Kelly visited the castle when she was 17 with Grandpa Roy when he was in England for a conference.
