This
page allows interested users easy access to software resources that may
help you use and enjoy Russian capabilities on your computer. Please
note: The inclusion of commercial sites on this page does not imply that
I endorse any one of them, except my own.
Dictionaries
Ectaco.
Commercial
site. "Ectaco, Inc. software solutions are based on the high
level of expertise and experience of Ectaco linguists, programmers and
designers. "
ETS
Publishing House. This
commercial site sells both software
versions of dictionaries and traditional dictionaries. Especially
check out their easy-to-install, downloadable
Polyglossum series of dictionaries.
Freeware
dictionary program. This free, nifty dictionary contains 22,600
words in Russian - English and 31,700 words in English - Russian.
Download and install on your own computer.
On-Line
Dictionaries. Not really downloadable software, but can be used
on-line while connected to the Web.
Slovar
for Windows 95/98. Download an Italian-Russian-Italian and/or
a Finnish-Russian-Finnish dictionary, free!
Other Software
The
Abbyy OCR program,
FineReader
OCR for Cyrillic also is available from this Australian commercial
site.
Fingertip
Software. Fingertip Software is a commercial site that offers,
among other things, its marvelous little program Cyrillic
Central. This package allows one to convert between at least
16 different encodings of Cyrillic.
Presto!
OCR Pro 3.0 is exactly the same product as FineReader OCR for Cyrillic.
It was available at a local computer superstore. I use it.
The Cyrillic font is on the Lingvo 5.0 disc.
Ruskiy
Soft. Links to software that either have a Russian-language interface
or a description in Russian.
The
Speaking Clock website. This neat, free little program has a
plug-in that will announce the time for you, in Russian, as often as you
want.
VIRTUOSO,
a description of a commercial program to help you learn to type
on a Russian keyboard. Requires Win1251.
The
Words Software Program. This semi-commercial site offers
a small program that pops up every few minutes with a new word to translate
for practice. I'm using it. Great practice!
