Video of Egypt
Grandpa made very little video of Egypt. These few represent the
ones he did make. They are large and may take some time to load on a dial-up.
To speed up download time, sound has been removed from all but "Balloon
Dance" and "The Truck! The Truck!"
Airborne -- Pre-dawn video of other balloons following
the one in which your grandparents were flying.
Balloon Dance -- Who says Muslims won't touch a
woman to whom they are not married? In this video, Grandma celebrates
her very first hot air balloon flight with one of the ground support crew.
With sound.
Deir el-Bahari -- Built against the cliffs, an
expedition from Poland has been excavating the area for at least 10 years
and has found a third building in the complex. Deir el-Bahari later
was converted to a Coptic Christian monastery.
Deir el-Medina (The Vally of the Workmen) -- Visible
is the area where those who worked on the tombs at the Valley of the Kings
and Valley of the Queens lived. In addition, the paths along which they
walked to and from work each day are still visible.
Early morning riders -- Two people riding donkeys
pass below.
Karnak -- Views of the hippostyle hall at the Temple
of Karnak in Luxor. This video lasts nearly 3 minutes.
Medinet Habu -- The funerary temple of Rameses
III, the roof is now gone and only the bottoms of the columns of the hippostyle
hall remain. Many workmen for the tombs in the two valleys lived
just outside the walls of the temple for protection.
Terrain -- The desert and mountains, as seen from
the balloon.
The Truck! The Truck! -- With sound, this
clip shows the balloon support truck racing to catch up and reach the balloon's
eventual landing site before it does. The ground crew is whistling
and playing a drum.
The Western Gebel (the region of the dead) -- The
goddess Hathor was mistress of the Western Gebel. Many private tombs
were dug into the cliffs and some are visible in the video.
