RSK MiG to Produce Batches of MiG-29SMT and MiG-29K Fighters
in 2009
The Russian Airplane Building Corporation MiG (RSK MiG) will
continue production and deliveries of MiG-29SMT and MiG-29K fighters in 2009, a
source close to the corporation has reported to AviaPort.
He specified that RSK MiG is participating this year in deliveries to the
Russian air force of the "Algerian" MiG-29SMT fighters. "Moreover,
the possibility of the delivery of an additional batch of MiG-29SMT fighters
for the Russian air force is being investigated," the agency source noted.
Also, according to his information, the first batch of ship-based MiG-29K
fighters for India is supposed to be handed over in the second half of this
year by RSK MiG.
The specialist emphasized that RSK MiG was and remains the lead plant for
manufacturing MiG-29SMT and MiG-29K. "Only after concluding deliveries of
this type of aircraft is the closure or curtailment of the RSK MiG production
facility possible," the agency source thinks.
He recalled that at the present time series production of the MiG-29 family of
fighters has been organized at two production facilities - in Moscow and the
town of Lukhovitsy (Moscow Oblast'). "The
technology for manufacturing fighters of practically all modifications has been
developed fully at RSK MiG, and the production of the fighters and their export
delivery practically has not stopped and is continuing now," he noted.
Answering a question about prospects for producing the MiG-35 airplane at the
Nizhniy Novgorod Sokol aircraft building plant, the specialist expressed the
opinion that unfolding of the new aircraft's productions will require large
expenditures for launching production using the specified technologies and
necessary volume. The source recalled that the Nizhniy Novgorod enterprise had
produced in due course the MiG-25 fighters and afterwards, the MiG-31, too. Moreover,
the twin-seat combat training variant of the fighter, the MiG-29UB (recently
the upgraded MiG-29UBT) was produced and is being produced at the plant. Production
of the "sparka" ((trainer)) was small (1 - 2 "sparka" for
10 combat.) Thus, production of the MiG-29UB has been launched, but will not
developed in significant numbers. "The Sokol plant practically has to
familiarize itself anew with series production of the MiG-35 fighter again with
large expenditures for preparing for production and methods at this
facility," he thinks.
In the expert's opinion, large expenditures for preparing MiG-35 series
production at a new enterprise will reflect negatively on the fighter's factory
price in connection with the need for the return of these expenses. "The
MiG-35 is extremely attractive in terms of price and quality, but this ratio
can be destroyed from an increase of the fighter's price," he reported.

2010
The Algerian defense ministry will receive the first six
Yak-130 combat training airplanes in 2010, Jane's Defense Weekly Reports
referring to its correspondent in Algeria.
Four of these airplanes are supposed to be assembled at the Irkutsk aviation
plant. The AI-222-25 engines for the Yak-130UBS that are intended for Algeria
already have been received at the enterprise.
Algeria entered into a contract for the delivery of 16 Yak-130UBS within the
framework of a package agreement with a total cost of nearly 7 billion dollars
signed in 2006 during a visit to Algiers by Russian president Vladimir Putin. Cost
of the UBS was nearly 200 million dollars.
The Yak-130 is a new generation trainer and combat trainer and can be used for
primary and advanced training of military airmen who pilot fourth and fifth
generation fighters. The airplane is equipped with nine weapons hard points and
able to carry a combat payload weighing up to three tonnes. The Yak-130 takeoff
weight is 9,000 kilograms, maximum speed is 1,050 kilometers per hour and
maximum flight range is 2,000 kilometers.
