First Stage of Work on
Creation of Russo-India Fifth Generation Airplane Will Be Fulfilled
This Year
The
first stage of
work on creation of the joint Russo-India fifth generation airplane
will be
fulfilled this year, ARMS-TASS reports referring to the acting hear of
the
Unified Aircraft Building Corporation and general director of the
Sukhoy and
RSK MiG companies, Mikhail Pogosyan.
“I
think the main
volume of work on the first stage will be fulfilled this year and, most
likely,
next year we will be able to present the results of the joint work to
the
customer. Most likely, (it will
be) in the first half of 2012,” he said at the Aero India-2011 air
salon which
opened in Bangalore.
The
contract for the
development of the draft engineering design of the future multirole
fighter was
signed by Rosoboronehksport and the Indian Hindustan Aeronautics
Limited
corporation in December 2011 ((sic, means 2010)). According
to Indian sources, the cost of the
joint development program and production of the fifth generation
fighter will
be 8 - 10 billion dollars. The
project’s financing will be realized on a parity basis. It is planned to offer the new aircraft to
customers for a cost of 85 - 100 million dollars.
The
new airplane has
received the designation FGFA (Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft) ((all
in
English)) in India. It is planned that
India’s defense ministry will purchase nearly 250 fifth generation
fighters, in
which connection a large part – up to 200 aircraft – are the twin-place
version.
It is
assumed the FGFA
will enter the Indian air force combat composition not earlier than
2017, while
it's twin-seat variant may reach service 2 years later than the
single-seat.

Russia to Help Croatia
Upgrade MiG-21 Fighters
Croatia’s
defense ministry has invited Russian
specialists to evaluate the possibility of upgrading fighters serving
in the
country's inventory, Lenta.RU reports referring to Croatian Times ((in
English)). There are 18 MiG-21 in the Croatian inventory at the present
time,
only 10 of which can make flights. The military leadership plans to
upgrade 8
airplanes that have been used for more than 30 years already.
According
to the Croatian defense minister's
announcement, only the manufacturer of these fighters can evaluate
their
suitability for upgrade. The cost for improving the 8 MiG-21 is
estimated at 20
million dollars. Croatia will be able to extend the service life of the
Soviet
manufactured fighters thanks to the upgrade. At the present time they
foresee
the write-off of the MiG-21 in 2013.
In
case the Russian specialists –
Rosoboronehksport and RSK MiG employees – conclude it is impossible to
upgrade
the airplanes, Croatia will investigate the possibility of buying used
fighters
on the worldwide market. In particular, the country may obtain several
airplanes from India which it would be possible to use for 10 more
years. As
possible total of three million euros is estimated for the purchase.
What
kind of fighters in particular Croatia
may obtain from India is not being specified. Most likely it is the
MiG-21. At
the present time 157 MiG-21 fighters are in India's inventory, the
start of
write-off of which is planned for 2011.
It
earlier had become known that Croatia and
Slovenia had begun formation of a working group which will be involved
with the
examination of the parameters of a joint fighter purchase. The states plan in total to obtain 12
multirole fighters from which a joint squadron will be created. They
will
assign the new formation to the Slovene Tserkla ob Krklya ((phonetic))
air
base.
