OAO VASO Halts Assembly of Il-112 Prototypes

The Voronezh Joint Stock Airplane Building Company has halted assembly of prototypes of the new Il-112 cargo airplane, Kommersant-Voronezh reports.

According to the information of sources ((sic)), the defense ministry, which is the project' customer, is not financing continuation of the work. They are explaining at VASO that the military now are revising their investment in Il-112 development. A little less that 800 million rubles are needed in the opinion of top management for assembly of the prototypes that have been ordered.

Sources familiar with the situation at the enterprise reported the information that VASO has now halted work on the Il-112 project. A source at the corporation specified that "the fact, really, has occurred," explaining that the reason is in the defense ministry's decision to temporarily halt financing of the Il-112 project, having specified that "for the plant there is no problem, inasmuch as right now it is concentrating most of all on An-148 series production."

The VASO general director, Vitaliy Zubarev, declared that it is a question not so much about halting the project, as about the revision of investments in Il-112 development. "The defense ministry began requiring accounting for the usage of state funds for the project starting from 2004," he explained. It was difficult for Mr. Zubarev to name the total invested in the project, explaining that only OAO Il'yushin Aircraft Company who is in charge of it possesses all the information about the Il-112. Mr. Zubarev also specified that a bit less than 800 million more rubles are needed for completion of Il-112 prototype assembly.
