One More Tu-160 Strategic Bomber to Reach Russian Federation Inventory on 29 April

One more Tu-160 strategic bomber will enter the Russian Federation air force inventory in April 2008, the air force commander-in-chief, General-Colonel Aleksandr Zelin reported on Tuesday.

"We hope that on 29 April the 121st Heavy Bomber Regiment will receive the new Tu-160 airplane," the CinC said.

This year, he added, Russia's air force plans to get three-four more such airplanes into the 121st regiment.

"It is that aircraft on which per se all word has been performed, it has been adapted for new weaponry," the CinC noted.

There are now 15 Tu-160 in the Russian Federation air force inventory. It is planned to bring the number of Tu-160 to 30 airplane altogether in the near future.

The Tu-160 is a supersonic strategic missile carrier with a variable geometry wing. It is intended for destruction by nuclear and conventional weapons of the most important targets in remote military and geographic regions and the deep rear of the continental theaters of military actions.

The airplane has a high level of computerization of the aircraft equipment. The information system in the cockpit is presented by electro-mechanical displays and displays on monitors. The traditional steering column for large aircraft has been exchanged for a control stick, similar to fighters.

The maximum takeoff weight is 275 tonnes, maximum flight speed is more than 2,000 kilometers per hour and flight range is greater than 13,000 kilometers. The Tu-160's primary weapons consist of subsonic long-range cruise missiles which are armed with a nuclear warhead. The usage of various types of bombs in different configurations with a total weight up to 40 tonnes is possible.

Air Force CinC: Fifth Generation Airplane Will Begin Flights in 2009

The fifth generation airplane will begin flights in 2009. As RIA Novosti reports, the Russian Federation air force commander-in-chief, General-Colonel Aleksandr Zelin announced this to journalists today.

"I am deeply convinced that this aircraft will fly in 2000," he said.

According to the CinC, he has been at the plant in Komsomol'sk-on-Amur several times and is completely aware of the situation.

"We are satisfied on the whole with the creation of this aircraft. I will be reporting to the government about how it is being created. It's the future of the Russian air force," RIA Novosti quotes Zelin.

It is recalled that in December 2007, the Komsomol’sk-on-Amur Yu.A. Gagarin Aviation Production Association (KnAAPO) which is included in the Sukhoy Holding Company, began assembly of the first prototypes of the future multirole fifth generation fighter. Flight tests may begin in 2009.

The fifth generation fighter is being developed as a multirole complex which will be distinguished by high mobility, secrecy, intelligence and survivability in the resolution of missions for securing complete mastery in the air and destroying ground and naval targets.  This airplane’s high combat effectiveness will be the result of its flight performance and ability to use precision weapons.
