Upon his return from the Votkinsk missile plant Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty facility, Grandpa Roy poses at a memorial to his favorite test pilot, Valeriy Chkalov, the first man in history to fly non-stop across the North Pole from Moscow to the United States. Chkalov had a co-pilot and navigator with him and landed in Vancouver, Washington. The crew depicted on the right side of the memorial is that of Mikhail Gromov. His flight a few weeks later across the Pole took him into Baja California, Mexico, but the Mexican government would not allow him to land there. Gromov then returned into the U.S. and landed in Los Angeles.
